Kannawidan Festival is a celebration that lasts from the last week of January up to the first week of February. Included in the course of events is the commemoration of the foundation day of the province. It is the Ilocanos' way of giving thanks to the Almighty not only for the bountiful blessings but also for the rich heritage of the city, including the close family ties among the Ilocanos. This event showcases the deep-rooted religiosity of the townsfolk.
This year's celebation the old and the new in Ilocano culture are both featured in this year’s Kannawidan Ylocos Festival - the festival of Ilocos Sur that celebrates its being a separate province and its being a treasure chest of traditions and culture. The festival is also a show of the province’s trade and agriculture products, and is a livelihood training ground for women and students through the Department of Trade and Industry and Department of Agriculture. It is also the festival of the arts in consonance with the National Arts Month in February. Focusing on the rituals and traditions of the Ilocanos, grade school to college students compete in photography; T-shirt design (computer-rendered, and manual); souvenir making in wood, bamboo, buri, shells, and clay; on-the-spot event using any medium, painting for 18-35 years old, and comic strip drawing. This became an annual festival that aims to create awareness on the preservation of the province' rich cultural heritage, practices and traditions, and a showcase of the different agriculture and industry products. It is very significant to every resident in the province as we are celebrating the foundation of Ilocos Sur as a province by virtue of the Royal Decree signed on February 2, 1818. This colorful week-long event was meant to be a living museum to showcase the customs and traditions of Ilocos Sur that people do not normally see or experience.
Kannawidan has really lived up to its mission and vision: preserving and perpetuating the rich Iloco cultural, artistic, historical and intellectual heritage. Kannawidan gatherings have always been a venue for Ilocanos, relations and friends, sharing and exchanging thoughts, views and insights on how to preserve and perpetuate the beautiful customs and traditions.
